Why Cloud infrastructure choice matters as much as the backup solution itself

Many organisations invest in high-performance backup solutions without realising that their data ultimately ends up hosted on infrastructure subject to American law. The Cloud Act of 2018 authorises US authorities to access any data hosted by American companies, wherever it is located in the world — including in Europe.

At Cybee, we made a clear choice: our platform runs on T Cloud Public, an OpenStack infrastructure operated by Deutsche Telekom, hosted exclusively in Europe. And for S3 object storage, we offer a choice of certified European partners, with no exposure to the Cloud Act.

T Cloud Public: Cybee’s backbone

The Cybee platform is deployed and operated on T Cloud Public (formerly Open Telekom Cloud), an enterprise-grade public Cloud based on OpenStack, operated by T-Systems (a Deutsche Telekom subsidiary).

It is one of the most certified Cloud infrastructures in Europe, meeting the strictest requirements in terms of compliance, security, and data localisation.

This choice is deliberate: T Cloud Public is a 100% European provider, subject solely to German and European law (GDPR), with no American parent company that could be subject to the Cloud Act.

T Public Cloud : certifications and commitments

T Cloud Public holds ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018 (protection of personal data in the Cloud), and SOC 2 Type II certifications, and carries the BSI C5 accreditation (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik), the German benchmark for Cloud security.

These certifications cover the physical, logical, and organisational security of the datacentres.
